Double Hammock Beginnings

The origins of the hammock can be traced back to about 1000 years ago. Many Central American and South American countries, for example, have an ancient association with hammocks that predates that of North Americans by some 800 years or so.

The Mayan Indian culture, however, is credited with having created the first hammocks about 1000 years ago. This outstanding culture has a history of some advanced creations: a Mayan calendar of renowned accuracy; beautiful pyramids and other edifices; a writing system for their own use; and, of course, the ingenious web-like hammock, to name just a few of their creations.

When Columbus visited the Bahamas searching for gems and spices, he noticed local natives sleeping in hammocks during afternoon siesta. Columbus took some of these hammocks back to Europe, which interested many European sailors enough for them to adopt using them to sleep at sea.

An obvious benefit of the hammock learned early on is the fact that because it’s suspended and not contacting the ground, it offers protection from snakes and other poisonous creatures. Also, some 16th century explorers, it is said, used to light small fires under the hammocks to create warmth and help keep pests at bay while they slept.

Naval and Prison Use

The Navy in Europe made their hammocks from canvas, a material that was utilized for about 300 hundred years. These naval hammocks were small and restrictive to users, though, and certainly couldn’t be classed as double hammocks, allowing only a few inches in width.

In the 1800’s the British prison system made use of the hammock as standard sleeping equipment to save on prison space - and perhaps this led to the indoor hammock becoming popular later on in the general public. The hammocks in prison could be erected or taken down quickly and easily stored for space saving.

In the late 1800’s the hammock gained in popularity in North America. Today, up to 2 million hammocks are sold on the continent annually.

Why Sleep in a Hammock?

Surprisingly, a hammock can be a great help with back pain and helping a person to sleep. Here are some of the benefits people are noting when sleeping in a hammock:

  1. No pressure points while sleeping. Sleeping on the ground or on a conventional mattress means body contact points that lead to some discomfort. You end up tossing and turning in an effort to get comfortable. A hammock provides zero-pressure points, greatly helping comfort and relaxation.

  2. Lying in a hammock induces natural sleep, and studies indicate that rocking may assist brain activity and help to lead to deeper and more meaningful sleep.

Vivere UHSDO9 2-Person Hammock Features

Modern hammocks, like the Vivere UHSDO9 Double Hammock, offer much more comfort than the old hammock models. A 9-foot space-saving stand enables you to set up your hammock in a convenient location without using the old system of tying the hammock within two trees. The Vivere hammock with stand is a 2-person hammock and you have a choice of a double hammock made with cotton or Sunbrella fabric.

The cotton hammock is a totally cotton product made with a close weave and is breathable, keeping a user comfortable and free from perspiration. The stripe-colored fabric is vegetable-dyed and has long-life qualities, especially if the hammock is brought indoors when it rains. Simply hand wash in cold water, avoiding non-bleach detergent, if cleaning is needed.

Sunbrella fabric is a modern, popular alternative to cotton, made of acrylic fibers. It has the look and feel of cotton, but will not fade or degrade. Being very weather and stain resistant and able to withstand mildew and atmospheric chemicals season after season, the Sunbrella hammock is very durable. Cleaning with mild soap and lukewarm water, rinsing, then letting it air dry, is all that is needed to maintain the fabric’s bright color.

You can feel secure sleeping in the Vivere hammock because the steel stand is made from heavy gauge steel and offers stable support. At just 35 pounds, the complete hammock system can be easily moved around the patio or garden. Assembly or dismantling for storage is quick and easy without tools being needed.
