When a Pole Saw Would be Handy

A difficulty when using a ladder for tree trimming is the restriction in reaching precise areas, generally through personal falling concerns. The result is that you are unable to reach those branches threatening telephone wires or overhanging your roof with your tree pruners or hand saw. Of those branches that you are able to reach, are they being cut neatly so that you don’t end up damaging the tree?

There’s an art in pruning trees. Damaged branches, for example, should be removed first so that water and nutrients being fed to those can be re-distributed to healthy areas. Also, areas thick with branches need to be thinned out as being too close together they become susceptible to fungus or air circulation throughout the tree becomes restricted.

Don’t overdo pruning as each branch removed tends to compromise a tree’s protection system; restrict heavy pruning to just once a season.

As you can see, then, there are limitations when tackling tree trimming haphazardly, especially when using a ladder to reach certain branches for pruning. Precision is needed to prune trees correctly.

If you do find yourself regularly standing precariously on a ladder with a hand-held cutting tool attempting to trim tree branches above you, it’s time, perhaps, to invest in a telescopic tree pruner.

Electric Pole Saw

A pole saw, for example, will enable you to tackle the job in hand while maintaining a secure footing on the ground. A cordless pruner like the pole saw effectively does away with your ladder as the pole saw extension will allow you to prune branches more than 10 feet above your head. Thus, your tree pruning tasks around the garden will be considerably less time-consuming and more productive.

The Black and Decker LPP120 Cordless Pole Saw offers homeowners a 20 volt cutting tool capable of tackling pruning of branches up to 6 inches in diameter that are some 14 feet from the ground.

20-volt MAX lithium-ion long-life battery.

Extensions give a useable saw length of 6.5 or 10 feet, with an overhead reach of up to 14 feet.

8-inch cutting bar and chain enables 6-inch cutting diameter.

Weight: 6.3 pounds.

Comes with battery and battery charger.

A blade guard and carrying bag are provided.

2-year limited warranty.

The LPP120 is light at 6.3 pounds, with low noise and vibration, making it easier to handle than the heavier gas-controlled pole saws.

The charger provided will charge the battery in about 4 hours. The battery can also be used with other Black & Decker tools.

A lock button is pulled back with the thumb and a trigger squeezed with the fingers to turn on the machine. The lock button is released once the machine is running. Releasing the trigger turns the tool off.

On releasing the trigger, or if kickback occurs, an auto-stop chain brake quickly stops the machine.

For Efficient Operation:

The pole saw should be running at full speed before pruning or making a cut. It should be held firmly and light pressure only is needed while cutting. Forcing the action could lead to motor overload or burn-out.

It’s important to maintain the correct chain tension, which is easily checked by noting how the chain snaps back after being pulled 1/8-inch (3 mm) away from the chain bar. Any sagging indicates the chain needs to be adjusted. Instructions for chain tensioning are easily followed in the machine manual.

It is recommended that you oil the chain each time (before) the pole saw is used. No automatic oiling is provided.

The pole saw extensions are clearly marked for assembly, with assembly instructions outlined in the machine manual.

A powerful 20-volt MAX lithium-ion battery provides long-lasting performance and can provide up 100 cuts of 1.5-inch pine branches per charge.

The Black & Decker LPP120 is eco-friendly, thus it avoids the hassles associated with a gas-controlled unit.

User Comments

Although the average user review rating is 4 stars for this product, a complaint that keeps coming through is battery life and the re-charging time needed.

Depending on the toughness of the job being tackled, users cutting time can vary from a half hour to one hour. Some users may only be part of the way through a particular task, then, before the battery dies and the time taken to re-charge a battery may mean having to finish off the job the following day. A spare battery is therefore recommended by many users.

Some users suggest a faster charger - like the:Black & Decker L2ACF-OPE 20V MAX Lithium Ion Fast Charger - should be purchased, other than the supplied charger, which they say will charge the battery in a half hour. Both chargers are around the same price of nearly $40, so for quick half hour charging rather than the 3-5 hour manufacturer's stated charging time with the supplied charger, the fast charger would appear to be a better option.

Satisfaction is expressed by some users that the supplied battery can be used with other Black and Decker products.

Once the three extension pieces are connected the pole saw is heavy for some users. It is recommended, users say, to use just two extensions whenever possible for lightness and maneuverability.

Manual chain oiling is a bind, some say, and they can't understand why the manufacturer didn't incorporate automatic oiling into the product.

The LPP120 Cordless Pole Saw could be an ideal choice in outdoor power equipment for homeowners needing to trim or prune tree branches overhead on a regular basis. Its light weight and great power provided by a long-lasting MAX lithium-ion battery offer gardeners an easy means of tackling tree-pruning garden tasks.

There is a waiting time of up to 4 hours for the battery to be charged and a spare battery should be on hand as a backup. Consideration also should be given to purchasing a faster charging charger.

No automatic chain oiling is supplied, which should be noted by the manufacturer and be incorporated into future models.
